Cafe De Hong Kong - Day out with family

It’s family day~ We'd decided to dine at this family restaurant again, Cafe de Hong Kong! It’s been such a long time since we last visited during CNY. We were quite impressed with the food back then.

Ya Kun Kaya Toast- The Original Crispy Thin Kaya Toast?!

Remember we used to frequent this original Ya Kun Kaya Toast when we were young. They're famous for their ultra-thin crispy toasts which make us wonder if they are the first to come up with this. Ya Kun has many franchises located all over Singapore but undoubtedly, we still think that this original stall maintain the best standard.

When the half boiled eggs were presented before our eyes, we were already very much impressed. They were runny and boiled to perfection. Definitely satisfying to dip our toasts into them!

How can we miss out on Ya Kun's famous kaya toast? They were soo thin and crispy when they're hot. However, they failed to retain the crispiness upon cooling, unlike Tong Ya's ultra crispy toast. To our utter disappointment, the toasts tasted 'lao hong' when they cooled down. Kaya wise, pretty decent sweet, smooth kaya but we prefer Good Morning Nanyang's eggy, clumpy kaya. It's not as sweet and has stronger kaya fragrance.

J & A's rating: 4/5

This is Ya Kun's new addition to their menu, peanut butter toast. The peanut butter reminded us of the ones we always find in older days kopitiams. Traditional liquid peanut butter that's not as thick and sticky as Skippy's peanut butter. Perfect with traditional toasts or steamed lothi! Our only grouse is that too little peanut butter was spread onto the toasts, thus lacking in the shiok factor.

J's rating: 4/5, A's rating: 3.75/5

Ya Kun has definitely built up a strong brand over the years but with the emergence of strong competitors, they certainly have to put in much more effort to ensure consistency in quality across all its outlets and improve on their specialty to give it an X factor in order to stand out from the rest.

Good Morning Nanyang III- Peanut Thick Toast

We had a surprise from Mr Byron Shoh, owner of Good Morning Nanyang Cafe when we went down 2 days ago. Apart from ordering our usual orange ciabatta set, Mr Byron let us try out his new creation: Peanut Butter Thick Toast! We were definitely very honoured and appreciated his treat. Thank you!

The peanut butter thick toast was drizzled with condensed milk but it was not too sweet. Thick gooey peanut butter with the crispy and soft thick toast, it was simply amazing! The bread was softer than Toastbox's thick toast.

(J: I would prefer him to use crunchy peanut butter instead of the smooth creamy peanut butter. I also like my peanut butter to be more watery like those sold in hdb bakery and confectionary shops)

J's rating: 4.25/5, A's rating: 4.5/5

However, this peanut butter thick toast is not in the menu yet. Byron is still in the midst of experimenting and coming up new creations for his menu. Hopefully this will be included in the menu soon so that all of you can try it! We deeply appreciate him for listening to our feedback and suggestions and be sure we'll be back for more!

Toast Box - Gimme peanut butter thick toast!

Peanut Butter Thick Toast, $1.50
Photobucket
We specially requested for extra peanut butter to our peanut thick toast!! Yeah! The aunty was kind enough to spread GENEROUS amount of peanut butter on our thick toast! It was super shiok eating it! We're now in search for the best thick toast in town!
J: The peanut butter was more gooey this time round but contained many chunky peanuts unlike the last time we ate. I guess it will be more liquid if only a thin layer of peanut butter is spread onto the warm thick toast. Too greedy? Perhaps, but we enjoyed it :P

A: I've been craving for peanut butter thick toast since god knows when! haha...Ever since I've tried the thick toast at Toast Box 2 weeks ago, I'm in love with it. I used to hate peanut butter because of the sticky taste it leaves in my mouth but now, I am able to accept it, not hate it or like it. However, nutella is still my best friend. :)

Seng Hong Coffee Shop- Innocent Temptation, Blast from the Past~

J: Innocent temptation, tts how i will describe u... U look sooo o-r-d-i-n-a-r-y when i first met u. I knew i was wrong when i first had u. My eyes lit up immediately... U r simply e-x-t-r-a-o-r-d-i-n-a-r-y~ I melted when u greeted me with immense softness n warmth... Moist, fluffy n chewy too. Peanut butter erupted from ur sides when i sank my teeth into u... There was no choice n i knew i had to act fast. I always had a soft spot for liquid peanut butter instead of e sticky skippy ones... Though it was extremely unglam, pls pardon me for sucking every bit of peanut butter tt oozed out from ur warm body. My heart was crying out badly for u when i finished every last bit of u, even licking e peanut butter tt stained my fingers... It was then i knew tt 2 isn't enough for total satisfaction. Before i knew it, i had asked for another. U r simply divine n perfect, hidden in this little corner of lengkok bahru. I would gladly trade any crispy kaya toast just for u, my love~ Tempt me no more~
Steamed lothi with peanut butter $0.50

Kopi-O siu dai
The kopi-o though, was too sweet for me even though i requested for less sugar. It was decent, but not thick enough.
Total bill: $2.70 for 3 lothis with peanut butter, kopi-o, 1 egg
J's ratings: 4.8/5 steamed lothi with peanut butter, 4/5 kopi-o siu dai

Good Morning Nanyang Cafe II- Good morning, ginger~

J: This time round i ensured tt i brought my camera out but guess what? I left my SD card in my laptop!! omg not again!! :( The following pics were taken using my hp n really do e wonderful breakfast injustice.
I've been craving for ginger jam ever since Bryon treated us on our previous visit. How could I resist this refreshing & lightly sweetened scottish ginger jam? Previously, we spread e jam on our raisin scones n this time round, i tried to be innovative n thought to myself, "Why not ginger jam with orange ciabiatta?" Before I can even applaud myself for this creative combination, i find myself lamenting over e mistake i made... Well, ginger jam n orange ciabiatta taste great on their own but not together! The ginger jam was so overpowering tt it overwhelmed e orange ciabiatta. I could no longer taste e orange peel. I guess I should just stick to my scone with ginger jam next time.

A: The ciabiatta tasted best with their homemade kaya! Don't ever try to replace with jams! Jams are exclusively for scones only!

Ciabiatta with Kaya

This ciabiatta is oh-so-soft when we took e 1st bite. Just look at e air gaps inside e ciabiatta~ Unlike Cedele's ciabiatta which is toasted such tt e entire bread is crispier n drier, this ciabiatta is lightly toasted to give a slight crisp on its crust.

J: I wonder y this ciabiatta is much thicker than e orange ciabiatta. Hmmm... Anyone can enlighten me on this?

We simply loveeee their eggy kaya in contrast to e traditional sweeter smooth kaya tt we find in bakeries. The fragrance of e pandan, appropriate sweetness tt hits my tastebuds & e slight rough texture of e kaya won my heart over. They r really generous in e spread of kaya n i really appreciate tt! One minor complaint though, is tt e ciabiatta hardens upon cooling which means we gotta exercise my jaws harder. We should just order our second set after we finish e first next time so tt we can savour our food while they're still hot n fresh :)

Good Morning Nanyang Cafe also offer thick toast and they'll be adding french toast with nutella & bananas to their menu! (A: My favourite!!! haha!) OMG can u sense our excitement? We simply adore e nutella & banana crepe we had in paris n nv did we try it with french toast b4. We cant wait for it to be dished out soon~ (J: However, i will probably still prefer my traditional thick toast n french toast with peanut butter :P Will it win my heart over?)

Wondered how come we nv reviewed on their drinks before? We tried their kopi-o n teh-c on our 1st visit n unanimously agreed tt they arent thick or aromatic enough for us. Subsequently, we only ordered milo or horlicks kosong. Well, milo n horlicks cant go wrong right? :P

Next on our to-try-list: Thick toast, strawberry champagne jam, french toast with nutella & bananas!

J & A's ratings: 4.25/5 Ciabiatta with kaya

Chin Mee Chin Confectionary- a disappointing & unhappy breakfast

J: Upon stepping into this confectionary, immediately i had e feelings of e old sch kopitiam. There r displays of the various buns n puffs & CMC's kitchen is v open where u can c all e workers baking, making kopis, tehs, half-boiled eggs etc. However, one major turnoff was the attitude of this auntie who made herself looked v busy although there's only 1 couple other than us waiting to order our food. She made us wait & gave us the cant-be-bothered attitude while taking our orders & this really pissed us off. Woke up early for a nice breakfast & this is what we got grRRrr. Anw, the breakfast was a MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT too.

The custard puff is the kind of custard which i hated most. Buttery jammy texture, not the milky smooth liquid custard which I like. The raisin bun has a very awkward taste which smelled weird to me. Most decent bun of all must be their homemade bun with kaya which is a soft fluffy bun slapped with sweet smooth kaya. Well, the bun is decent but the kaya's tad too sweet for me. Lastly, my kopi-o tasted like plain water. Diluted and not gao at all. I only had 3 sips n left with almost a cup full of kopi-o. Very disappointing indeed. Oh i forgot to mention they took years to make e half boiled eggs! We finished all the buns n puffs n e auntie hasnt even started making our eggs. In e end, we cancelled our orders -.-"" I would never head back to CMC confectionary again.

A: Nothing much to comment as I feel that the raisin bun, custard puff was horrible! And hoping that I could find a better Teh 'C' Kao after Tong Ya, I decided to order the same thing from CMC. It tasted like DRAIN WATER! Yucks!

J's ratings: 2/5 for custard puff, raisin bun & kopi-o, 3/5 for homemade bun with kaya

Tong Ya Kaya Toast: Best toast in Singapore! We found it!

The crispiest toast in Singapore! We love Chinatown! That's where all the good food are. We were a little crazy that day. Normally people will eat their kaya toast in the morning but for us? We had it in the evening! haha..
A little insane but worth it! Another gem in Chinatown. We ordered the so called "Grade A" kaya toast, which is toast that was toasted earlier, set aside and toast it again when customer requested for the crispier kaya toast. You got to tell the owner you want the crisper version! If not, you'll end up getting the normal kaya toast. (U can actually c 2 diff packets of bread fr e stall, 1 is e normal white bread while e other has alr been toasted n will be retoasted when u request for tt!) The crust of the toast was so delicate that it broke off when we tried to dip into the soft boiled egg!

A: Tong Ya Kaya Toast will remain as my No.1 toast! Better than Ya Kun Kaya Toast. I must comment that their Teh 'C' Kao is the best i had in SG as well! It has the Ooomh factor! Shiok!

J: i thought ya kun's kaya toast is alr v crispy n nv did i think tt there exist an even crispier n such crumbly kaya toast which literally breaks off when dipped into e half boiled eggs! oh yes btw, 1 egg is definitely insufficient for 2 kaya toasts! i almost brushed e plate dry while dipping my toast in it lol. The kopi-o gao siu dai is also v shiok! however, it does lack in e acidic after taste unlike Wah Yen's kopi-o. i have difficulty choosing which kopi-o i like more bcos both r really gd but sis thought tt tong ya's kopi is better haha.

A's rating: kaya toast 4.75/5, Teh 'C' Kao 4.75/5
J's rating: 4.75/5 for kaya toast, Kopi-o gao siu dai 4.7/5

Wah Yen Eating House- i found my no 1 kopi in sg!!

J: Our quest to find the ultimate kaya toast brought us all the way from Kallang to Sin Ming Road. Yes, we r tt crazy i know lol. But the trip wasn't a futile one! Upon reaching e kopitiam, we see a lot of ppl drinking kopi and eating the normal kaya toast which was toasted using the traditional white bread... However, we ordered the french toast with kaya which is toasted using the french loaf! This is certainly something new and refreshing to us. Woah upon sinking ur teeth into the toast, u can hear the shiok crispy sound~ Unlike the french toast served in HK cafes, their french loaves were delightfully toasted till the crust is crispy and slapped with their homemade kaya which isnt too sweet for me. Even after taking our own sweet time to enjoy our breakfast and sitting right in front of a big fan, the crust maintained its crispiness even as it cooled! The bread is still soft inside too.
Their half boiled eggs were cooked just right, not too watery nor hard and 1 egg is sufficient for me to soak all my kaya toast in it with leftovers.

But the best must be their kopi-o. I always liked old nanyang kopi from upper boon keng food centre becos their kopi is really aromatic n they roast quality coffee beans. This kopi-o is also very 'gao' n it gives e acidic after taste which i really like! I will really recommend kopi lovers to try it out!

A: I've tried french toast at elsewhere and I must say that their french toast is really different from others. Crispy even till the last bite! Although the french toast is nice, you must be very patience when ordering! It took us a while before the owner understood what we want. The owner of this store seem flustered when we're ordering. Perhaps it was busy in the morning. Make sure you order your toast and kopi correctly! If not, youll end up getting something different!
*Note: Is FRENCH TOAST! Not kaya toast!

J's ratings: 4.25/5 for french toast, 4.75/5 for kopi-o siu dai
A's ratings: 4.3/5 for french toast
