Udders - ieat EXTREME moOoO makan session!

Here we are, joining our very first ieat makan session at Udders!
Photobucket

Photobucket
Everybody were busy mingling with each other. It's really nice knowing new people
who enjoy eating as much as we do.

Photobucket
Don't you think Udders T-shirt looks cool & gorgeous? haha!

Photobucket
Our ice-cream menu for the day!
What's that extreme flavour?? hmmm...

Photobucket
The famous food blogger in Singapore, Dr Leslie Tay~!

Photobucket
Chief Milkman, Dave. Boss of Udders and the creator of the ice cream flavours. He used to be a secondary school teacher who taught eng, maths and science. After leaving the life as a teacher, he ventured into business and was contemplating btw opening an ice cream parlor or a burger joint. Ultimately, he settled for an ice cream cafe, Udders. He mentioned tt if he were to open a burger joint in future with his ice cream cafe, he would name it "Iceburg" lol! Anw, he spent 4 mths learning how to make ice cream and research. After much experimentation and samplings, he gained 5kg in 4mths and created over 30 ice cream flavours!

Photobucket
These were the flavours that we've tried!

Our fav of the lot: Strawberry~
Many of u may ask, how special can strawberry ice cream be when u can commonly find it everywhere? Sometimes, it is more difficult to make something ordinary extraordinary. This flavour stood out from the rest bcos u can actually taste and bite bits of strawberries embedded within the ice cream and the strawberry flavour is really intense. Dave has experimented using strawberry puree, frozen strawberries, fresh strawberries etc and the best ingredient in making this ultimate strawberry ice cream is of course, using fresh strawberries! Yes, strawberry is a seasonal fruit but he managed to find supplies all year round from different countries like USA, Korea etc.

Orange bitter choc was impressive at first due to the taste of the intense dark choc. But the alcohol was so overpowering tt we were over-satiated after a few mouthfuls. It's actually considered one of e mildest alcoholic flavour already.

Bailey's is ladies' best friend. Perhaps, we're just not lady-like enough to enjoy it =P 3 scoops of this is equivalent to a can of beer!

Hazelnut tasted like ferrero rocher.

If you are a durian lover, be sure not to miss out on Mao Shan Wang!
(A: It's as though u are eating frozen durian. Delicious~)

Initially when Dave just started out, he only had the classic and premium range of ice cream flavours. But he specially came up with the connoisseur range of ice cream just for this flavour which cost $5.30/scoop! Durian lovers should know tt Mao Shan Wang is akin to the king of durians and can easily cost up to $30/durian, so it shouldn't pain u tt much to satisfy ur durian cravings right?

The rest of the flavours were either ordinary or alcoholic contents were too strong for us to review.

Photobucket
While waiting for our extreme flavour to be served..
Wait a minute....our sharp noses picked up the fragrance of freshly baked waffles from the next table!!! We always have a soft spot for waffles and how can we resist its temptation?!
Gosh! We finally found a waffle that overtook our no. 1 waffle, Gelare, and its way better!
And for only..$2.50?! WHAT!!!

The waffle looked very much as the Belgian liege waffle. It was crispy on the outside and super soft inside! Smell and tasted somewhat similar to a pancake, full of buttery goodness. oOooMpHH waHhhHH! Heavenly~!!

Here comes our EXTREME FLAVOUR
SUPER SOUR LEMON SORBET
*This ice-cream was created for ieat ice-cream degustation only. Not for sale and not to be eaten! *

We were made to sign an indemnity form before sampling this sorbet. Yes, it is sooo sour and acidic tt it actually burnt Dave's tongue during experimentation. Definitely not for the faint-hearted! Luckily, we have Dr Leslie Tay on the standby. It's really funny seeing everyone's facial expressions. All their faces cringed and they shut their eyes sooo tightly upon shoving the first spoonful into their mouths lol. We only had a nibble and couldn't take it already haha!

Photobucket
We just can't get enough of ice-cream
Hence...we got another flavour for ourselves!
Cookies & Cream
(J: I thought it was better than Island Creamery, which had soggy cookies chunks, even though the cookies were finely mashed. But every spoonful was generously filled with cookies goodness in the creamy ice cream.)

Photobucket
We also tried out many flavours such kopi-c, Chocomash etc.
We discovered the Pure Pistachio flavour & it definitely makes us happy!!
The alcoholic flavours were just too strong for us. A few more scoops will make our faces turn red!
We enjoyed the ice-cream degustation session a lot and will definitely be joining many more in future!

Read here for ieat review.

Waffletown- Just how juicy can a fried chicken get?

Tucked away in the quiet Balmoral Plaza, Waffletown seemed to have garnered sufficient support from its pool of loyal patrons for years despite its location. Upon reaching, reminiscence of the good old A&W located at Tanjong Katong flashed through our minds.

The interior wasn't impressive at all. The tables and chairs were very old and the floors were peeling.
(J: I remember vividly how i used to enjoy sitting on these kind of chairs in Mcdonalds and rotate left & right throughout my meals lol.)
In terms of cleaniness, well, they're acceptable. Anw, what matters most is the quality of the food right? :)
2 piece fried chicken $4.50

These fried chicken took us by surprise. We've always thought that the KFC fried chicken and the fried chicken wings from mountbatten swimming complex were unbeatable. KFC's secret recipe includes marinating herbs onto their chicken to enhance its flavor. Though Waffletown's fried chicken may look ordinary, what's impressive is that without the additional touchups like KFC, the perfectly fried golden brown chicken retained its JUICYNESS really well and the skins were really CRISPY. Also noteworthy is that they only fry the chicken after each order so you can enjoy ur fried chickens while they're HOT! Beware and watch ur tongue when u bite! A downside is tt we can't make special requests to choose the desired parts of chicken. We love thighs bcos they're sooo tender n always avoided ribs cos' they're really dry n hard. However, Waffletown's ribs are tender n juicy as well! Angeline finished it even though she hated ribs!
(A: I was still gnawing on the bones even when I finished all the meat! haha)
FINGERLICKING GOOD~! Yumyum~
A's & J's rating: 4.5/5

Blueberry Waffle $3.90
A trip to Waffletown is definitely incomplete without its highly raved waffles. They're really affordable as compared to waffles elsewhere. However, we must say they failed to meet our expectations. Though freshly prepared, the waffle was far too crispy for our liking. It reminded us of the Haagen Dazs' waffle we had in Monaco. We thought tt we were eating waffle biscuits instead of the waffle itself. Of cos, Waffletown fared better but still, it was overbaked, in our humble opinion. It wasn't soft & fluffy inside and the waffle tasted rather bland on its own. The blueberry toppings were delectable though. Generously topped with really big n sweet blueberries, this was the only enjoyment for us. Well, either Waffletown fell short of its standard tt day or their waffles are just not pleasing to our palates. Gelare still ranks no. 1 for our waffles treat.

Sweet Stone Parad'Ice- The Angmoh Liège Waffle War!

Sweet Stone Parad’Ice caught our attention when we had our dinner at Old Airport Road Food Centre. It reminded us of Sweet Stone Holdings (SSH), the Liège waffle stall at Golden Mile Food Centre. The store display and prices bear close resemblance to its competitor.
James, the owner of Sweet Stone holdings, once told us that they are the original Liège waffle stall. We had a little chat with the owner of Sweet Stone Parad’Ice. He told us that the angmoh and James were once partners. But things changed when the partnership ended. And this led to intense competition between the two Liège waffle stalls. So which is the original Liège waffle stall? Well, we wouldn’t care much as long as we get to eat good waffles and belgian chocolates! We‘re waffles & chocolates fanatics remember? Haha

And this led to the next question:
Which is better?
Sweet Stone Holdings or Parad’Ice?

We specifically asked for freshly baked waffle instead of the premade ones and requested for more chocolate. Definitely in terms of generosity, Parad’Ice won hands down because without hesitation, the owner topped up our choc dip so much that for the 1st time, we actually had tiny bit of choc left after finishing our waffles!

Set A- 1 waffle + 1 choc dip $2.50, Set B- 2 waffles + 1 choc dip $4.30
Photobucket
The waffle here is more similar to the Liège waffle that we had in Brugge. It is more chewy than SSH's rendition of bready Liège waffle. The waffle was also coated with coarser sugar crystal to give an extra crisp. Hence, it is also sweeter than SSH's caramelised waffles. The owner did accede to our request for "MORE chocolate please!". We like the fact that the chocolate dip was really thick and intense. We could fully dip all the waffle into the chocolates even till the last bit! We love it so much that we ordered one set each after sharing the first set!
(A: We always requested more chocolate from SSH but they are usually more reluctant and stingy in the portion of choc dip due to high costs. The owner from Parad'Ice explained that they usually give smaller portions of choc because they can't afford wastage of these expensive heavenly belgian chocs but wouldn't mind giving more to those who can appreciate & finish this sweet treat =D)
(J: SSH though did impress me many times but their quality can be quite inconsistent. At times, their waffles can be quite crispy, prob due to over-heating. Sometimes, their choc can be quite diluted and not warm enough to give you e shiok factor.)
Photobucket
Both stalls may claim that they are the original Liège waffle stalls. But to us, it's the quality that matters. So who wins? We chose the latter.

J's & A’s rating: 4.75/5 for waffle, 4.8/5 chocolate

Gelare- Waffles on Tuesday, anyone?

Being waffle lovers, we are bent on trying out all the yummy waffles in Singapore!

Sadly to say, Gelare closed most of its outlets! BUT we found it again a few weeks ago hiding in a small corner at Orchard Central! We were so glad that the Tuesday promotion is still on! 50% off regular waffles. We ordered 1 waffle with vanilla bean & macadamia nut ice-cream for only $9.90!
(A: I love their vanilla bean ice-cream!  Rich vanilla fragrance just simply blew me off. ) Macadamia nut ice-cream was one of the better flavours that we’re tried in Gelare. With chunks of toasted macadamia nuts, ice-cream was marvellous.

Photobucket
Just look at the waffle. Thick, crispy and soft on the inside. The taste was unforgettable. It’s such an enjoyment eating their waffle and ice-cream! However, we feel that their waffle was a little pricey so we will only come on tuesday. Given a choice between Gelare's waffle or Sweetstone Liege Waffle, we will choose the latter.
(J: The waffle tasted a little salty on its own which i couldn't figure out why...)

Waffle Battle: Buttercup VS PrimaDeli

A: Remembered the times where I used to buy hot pandan waffles from a bakery on my way home after school. The smell of hot pandan waffles was so irresistible! It would always be my before meal appetizer and I always loved the chocolate fillings in the waffle. Hot and crispy waffles with chocolates oozing out, it was divine! It may be the best comfort food for me, at least.
Photobucket
We were at Square 2 where Janelle and I spotted Buttercup & PrimaDeli. Both selling our favourite food: waffles! We decided to try out Buttercup waffles first because we saw that they have chocolate+banana & nutella for the fillings. We ordered one waffle with nutella+banana with additional 60 cents! Seems like nutella is more expensive than chocolates. =.=
Combination of nutella & banana reminded us of Paris where we stood out in the cold weather and had a large crepe (nutella+banana) by a crepe kiosk. It was heavenly.
Photobucket

Despite the fact that the staffs were taking their own sweet time to serve our waffles (which caused our waffle to turn cold due to over fanning), the waffle remained so crispy! This was the first time where we ate a cold waffle and it was still crispy. Other waffles that we tried turned soggy upon cooling. Needless to say, we love it especially with the generous amount of nutella & banana. Guess it could be better if the waffle is hot. The waffles at Buttercup was not the usual pandan batter. A yellow batter perhaps with eggs mixture that add to the crisp of the waffle? Haha..not too sure about that. It’s their secret. Shhh…
Photobucket
J's & A’s rating: 4.25/5

We then headed over to PrimaDeli which was just beside Buttercup to try out the traditional pandan waffle. This time we had peanut butter fillings. We thought that the waffle will be crispy, but it turned out soft. This will not be the kind of pandan waffle that we’re expecting. Peanut butter was alright but became a bit sticky after a while.

Photobucket
J's rating: 3.25/5, A’s rating: 3/5

Next time when we are at Square 2, we will definitely choose Buttercup over PrimaDeli. Given the fact that they sell crispy waffles & crepes! Next time we will try out their crepes! Hope it will reminisce our memories in Paris.

Haato- follow your heart...

Food Tour Part III
There's always room for desserts, especially after a satisfying meal. We headed to Haato @marina square (inside subway) for waffles & ice cream!! Their gelato are manufactured in Singapore created from traditional recipes from Japan. Read from the website tt there's a wide selection of ice cream flavors but was kind of disappointed when some of the flavors tt we wanted to try were not there.
We are still actively searching for our number 1 waffle after the major waffle & ice cream giant, Gelare, closed down most of its oulets :( Haato's waffle is gd in terms of texture, crispy on the outside, soft n fluffy in the inside. However, we feel tt it was lacking in flavor and is pretty bland on its own. Oh yes btw, u can actually request for maple syrup at no extra cost! :) $6 for single scoop ice cream waffle. $3 for additional scoops of ice cream.

J & A's rating: 4/5 for waffle
Our all time favourite ice cream flavor is cookies & cream and black sesame. Haato certainly made the mark and did not disappoint! (J: I've always preferred cookies & cream ice cream where u can find chunks of crunchy oreos instead of the soggy ones. Scoopz @parkway used to impress me every time but recently when i tried, their oreos weren't as crunchy as last time. ) The oreos were certainly crunchy and our only complaint is tt their oreos were overcrushed, resulting in fine, tiny weeny oreo bits. Please give us some oreo chunks~

J & A's rating: 4.25/5 for cookies & cream ice cream

The black sesame ice cream was bursting with overwhelming sesame taste, yummy~ Again, we wished tt they can add more bite to this ice cream by incorporating some black sesame seeds.

J & A's rating: 4.3/5 for black sesame ice cream

We will certainly be back again to try other flavors!

Seventh Heaven: Is this really Singapore's heaven?

J: This time round our sweet tooth brought us to Seventh Heaven where u get innovative alcoholic ice cream flavors. Upon stepping into this cafe, u can c tt it is really a very open concept where u can c the preparations of ur food through the glass windows in their kitchen. One major grouse is tt its location is really out of e way! >.<

Well, we had sampled many of their flavors n i must say tt my favorite is lychee martini which goes really well with their popular warm choc cake. It is rather light n e taste of martini is really faint.

A summary of the flavors we had sampled:
Lychee Martini: Love the taste of lychee. Light n not too sweet. Faint martini taste.
Irish Cream: Has initial caramel bailey's taste to me n a nice undescribable lingering after taste. Sis preferred this to lychee martini.
Peanut: This is e best peanut ice cream i've ever tried. Creamy peanut but not too heavy to make u feel sick n sinful after finishing it. Goes rather well with warm choc cake too.
Chocolate Whisky: This flavor is rather heavy n e whisky taste is qt strong. Gets too heavy for me after a while n i dont think it will pair well with warm choc cake.
Chocolate Espresso: I actually like this more than choc whisky bcos u can bite into the crunchy aromatic coffee beans!
Black sesame: Very ordinary. MOF's definitely better cos u can actually bite e black sesame itself.

Photobucket

The real highlight must be their warm chocolate cake. It's the best I've had in sg, even better than bakerzin! They took 25min to bake this warm choc cake so u gotta make sure u have e time n patience to wait but i bet its worth e wait! The cake is crusty on e outside n super soft inside! Once u dip ur spoon into it, omg e cake crumbles n e warm choc oozes out like hot lava. Really shiok when I had it together with my cold lychee martini icecream! The warm choc is not tt heavy n sweet to make u feel sick after eating for a while unlike bakerzin but its really expensive for that small portion of cake lol. $7.80 for warm choco cake with a scoop of french vanilla icecream. Gotta top up another dollar if u change e flavor of ice cream.
Photobucket

Lastly, like any other typical ice-cream stalls, they also sell waffles. The waffle is e crispiest i've ever tried but its v airy inside. There is literally nothing inside except e crust lol. Sis thought Gelare's waffles way better than theirs.

A: I'm so sad that Gelare is no longer in business! Sad!!
Now I'm in search for my next best waffles. >.<
I really like the Oozing warm choco cake. It really goes well either with lychee martini ice-cream or the irish cream! It's not as sweet as bakerzin warm choco cake. Will never be satisfying just to have one!
*you should order 2 next time. haha*

J's ratings: 4.75/5 warm choc cake, 4.5/5 lychee martini, 4.25/5 irish cream, peanut & choc espresso, 4/5 choc whisky, 3.5/5 black sesame, 4/5 waffle

A's ratings: 4.75/5 warm choco cake, 4.25/5 lychee martini, 4.5/5 irish cream,4/5 peanut, chocolate espresso. 3.75/5 choco whiskey, 3.5/5 black sesame, 3.5/5 waffle

Sweet Stone Liège waffle & chocolate fondue

J: We have been missing our Swiss fondue and belgium waffles ever since we came back from our Europe trip. If I were to list the top 3 desserts I tasted in Europe that has the "ooOOmpH" factor, they would definitely be Swiss fondue from 'Des Alpes' in Interlaken, authentic Belgian chocolate waffle from 'Laurenzino Wafels' in Brugge and homemade bread pudding with custard from 'North Sea Fish Restaurant' in London. They are absolutely divine and I literally felt heaven upon the 1st mouthful!

Swiss fondue from 'Des Alpes'- thick warm chocolate fondue with nougats and nuts in it! What's so special about their fruits plate is that they added dried apricots which was something refreshing when dipped into the sweet choc fondue! The most shiok way of eating chocolate fondue is to dip ur fruits or marshmellows and suck the choc 1st when u placed them into your mouth. It's really shiok when u feel the choc running down ur throat! We think that bananas and marshmellows are the best marriage to choc fondue!

Belgian chocolate waffle from 'Laurenzino Wafels'~ Some of u might ask what's so special about belgian waffles? They look almost the same as what we find in singapore. Well, the first difference is distinctive.Unlike the usual liquid waffle batter used in singapore, belgian waffles are baked from dough. That's why you get a crispy crust on the outside and a soft chewy texture inside.

In my opinion, the perfect marriage to waffle is chocolate! Dip the freshly baked waffle into e rich belgian
chocolate and suck the chocolate while biting into the chewy Liège waffle, the mixture of sweetness, crispyness and chewy after taste is simply awesome!

After reading through our all time favourite "ieatishoot" food blog, we finally found a place to satisfy both our cravings for chocolate fondue and belgian waffles at hawker price! Welcome to the Sweet Stone at Golden Mile Food Centre~

For just $14.80, you get a belgian choc fondue, 2 waffles, fruits platter and 2 scoops of ice cream! Well, I must say although the waffle falls short of my expectations, it is still one of my top 3 waffles in singapore. We specifically requested for our waffles to be freshly baked instead of warming the prebaked ones that they had because we had previously tried the belgian waffle at old airport rd which was kind of disappointing when they merely warmed the waffles.

The owner was extremely accomodating and baked 2 waffles for us. Oh yes, he also mentioned that they were not affiliated to the old airport branch and proudly assured that theirs are of higher quality! It was a misunderstanding on my part to think that they were the same! sorry!!

Unlike the one I had in Brugge, this waffle is more bready but still decently delectable for a Liège waffle. "Liège waffles originated from the city of Liège, in eastern Belgium. They are richer, denser, sweeter, and more chewy waffles. They feature chunks of pearl sugar, which caramelize on the outside of the waffle, when baked, giving you the crunch and the sweetness of the waffle."

The owner begged to differ that warming a prebaked waffle will compromise its quality! He had even sent his waffles for lab tests and it has been proven that his waffles can be frozen up to a month without much compromise to its taste! Someday, I'm going to buy one back and try it haha. It was also very nice of him to share some tips with us. To warm ur waffle, preheat ur oven to 150oC and warm it for 45sec before eating.

Surprisingly, their chocolate is really fantastic and I highly recommend everyone to give it a try! It brought me back to the times spent in Brugge when I first tasted it. Yes, according to the owner, the choc is imported from Belgium so that the quality is not compromised. Also, unlike the Swiss fondue that we had in Interlaken which was warmed with candle, they actually microwave the claypot and pour warm choc into it. The reason is simple. The chocolate will be burnt if u warm it over a candle. However, I still prefer my choc to be warmed using a candle so that it can be kept warm throughout the makan session (it was done this way in Switz n the choc was not burnt). We recommended to the owner to try adding nougats or nuts into his choc but i guess he wants to retain the flavor of his belgian choc n its understandable. However, u r free to bring ur own toppings! Also, they dont sell the choc alone and it can only be bought with purchase of their waffles. One complaint from us is that we feel that the chocolate given was not enough. We finished the choc even before we finished the fruits platter! Yes, thats how good it is, almost on the verge of licking the claypot dry lol. But, u can always pay for additional choc at $1.

Lastly, I would like to comment on their gelato. There wasnt a lot of variety and I was rather disappointed with their gelato, with the exception of speculoos flavor. They homemade their ice cream daily from natural ingredients with no preservatives added. I thought the rest of the flavors were rather ordinary just like the ones u can easily buy from ntuc / the ice cream man outside schools. Angeline didn't like the fizzy apple flavor because its a sorbet. Just an ordinary sorbet that tasted sour to me. Speculoos however, was certainly refreshing n uncommon. It has an initial sweet caramel taste and a biscuit after taste. We certainly love it together with our waffles dipped with choc!

All in all, this place is definitely worth a visit for its quality and the price that u pay. U can be sure we will be back for its waffles but prob not the fondue because u pay less for the warm choc dip rather than warming the claypot for the same belgian choc. The marshmellows, fruits and choc dips can be purchased separately with the waffles.

P/s: Imo, the fondue is not really worth the price. They have waffle sets like Set A(1 waffle + 1 choc dip = $2.50), Set B(2 waffles + 1 choc dip = $4.20) etc. I think to make ur money worth, instead of paying $14.80 for the royal fondue, order 2 set As ($5) and bring ur own fruits! The choc dips r exactly e same as e fondue except they r not served in e microwaved claypot but they r still warm. Btw they only serve 3 scoops of choc dips in the clay pot. So even if u purchase additional choc dip n buy fruits from e fruit stalls, the price is still less than $14.80 :) For tt price, u can get 6 Set As which is definitely more shiok to satisfy all the sweet tooth out there lol!

A & J's Rating: 4.5/5 for waffles, 4.5/5 for belgian choc, 4/5 for Speculoos gelato
